I started this open forum to help make people aware of the pro driven information available on our website at http://www.profishingresearch.com/, and to request feedback on how to improve the information we provide. Over time, I hope to make this website a central repository of high quality, unbiased pro driven information that makes it easy for fellow bass fishermen to find the information they're looking for. If you like what you see, please pick up a copy of the DVD. It's a fantastic product that I'm confident can elevate the game of most any bass fisherman. Troy Showalter is an equity research analyst for a mutual fund company in Kansas. He's an avid recreational bass angler with a great desire to improve his knowledge level and skills, but doesn't have a lot of free time to bury himself in books, magazines or the Internet in an attempt to hash out the techniques and equipment that will make him more successful on the water.
So he started a company called Pro Fishing Research to try to flatten out the learning curve for himself and others like him. With the aid of a well-connected friend, he contacted dozens of Bassmaster Elite Series and FLW Tour pros, and 55 agreed to confidentially answer questions about preferred equipment and other topics, such as the top bass lakes in the U.S.
He launched a website, www.ProFishingResearch.com, a couple of weeks ago that contains the results of his 2008 survey. He'll attempt to cover some of the administration costs of the survey through the sales of instructional DVDs that he produces himself – he emphasized that he has no desire to sell ads on his site to companies within the fishing industry.
The first of the DVDs, which features Jimmy Houston, Ken Cook, Randy Howell, Jeff Kriet and Mike McClelland giving pointers on how to use the Top 10 lures from the survey, was viewed recently by a BassFan staffer and rated as excellent for instructional value. For $19.95, it's a full 2 hours worth of tips on how to rig, cast and fish the baits that catch bass just about anywhere they swim.
In some cases, the anglers giving the tips are sponsored by the companies that produce the bait. In other cases, they're not. For instance, there's not a Lucky Craft pro among the five listed above, and the Pointer 100 was the No. 1 lure in this year's survey. Howell and Kriet do a solid tag-team job in demonstrating it.
As for the survey, remember, the purpose is not to start arguments as to which is the best bait, rod, reel, line, lake or whatever. It's simply the aggregate of the confidential responses Showalter received from the pros in the network.
The five pros featured in the video were compensated for their services. Showalter said some anglers expressed interest in being identified as part of the network, but he won't divulge the full roster for fear that some could suffer damage in their relationships with sponsors (that might occur if the sponsors' products don't fare well in the survey).
Do yourself a favor and read his introduction before delving into the individual survey categories. Then use the numbers however you see fit.
